Galway Job Expo review, Job resources and what's next?
Hello all!!
Welcome back to my digests! Did you miss the digests?
Last time I had about 280 subscribers, and I am excited to see that there are almost 320 subscribed to my newsletter. I had started out with just a Facebook page, but I found that the info on Facebook is very fleeting, so hence this newsletter. If this is the first time you are reading my digest, thank you for subscribing :) and for those who have been following me longer, let’s continue the conversation.
It’s been a while since my last digest, but happy to be back! I took a well deserved break at the end of May. As it happens, this coincided with the arrival of a proper summer ( and also exams) as I was sitting exams in Project Management. 7 glorious weeks of sunshine and not a drop of rain, so I am very grateful I had the opportunity to actually enjoy the sunshine! I was also very excited to get my results halfway July! I now have a certified Diploma in Project Management associate level. Going forward I will publish a monthly newsletter, so next one will be halfway October.
Purpose of this digest is to help you orientate in the Galway Job Market, give you insights on what’s happening in Galway labour wise, info re housing if I come across info, and from time to time add some personal observations. I have covered various industry maps ( ie to visualize where companies are located), you can check out the articles in the archive. A new map has been published since, the Blockchain/Finctech map, so I’ll cover that map next time. If you missed out on the maps I covered earlier, check out the archives here. Want to get a job featured? Drop me an email katleen@galwayjobconnector.com
This newsletter is super long, so hang in there, I am covering a lot of ground!
If you like this newsletter, you can share it via Twitter and Facebook using the buttons on the right! Thanks!
Galway Job Expo - review & Jobs
Entrance into Job Expo
Ok, so today I am going to cover the Galway Job Expo!
The Expo took place on a (rainy) Saturday ,the 6th of September in the Salthil Hotel. As I have been before, I automatically went to the Galway Bay Hotel ( where it was held last year) to then discover it wasn’t taking place there anymore, but rather in the hotel next door.
There were about 13 Stands representing the Medtech Sector, Hotel/catering, and the ICT/Software Sector, a few recruitment agencies and some educational/educational stands. There were a number of workshops which were well attended. I was more interested in the actual jobs, so who’s hiring???
The medtech sector, by far, is the largest sector in Galway, employing well over 7500 people in Co. Galway. I recently read in “ County Galway 101 Interesting facts” that Co. Galway boasts the 2nd highest concentration of Medical companies in the world, Minnesota in the USA topping the poll.
Check this link to find out all the exhibitors.
As I walked around, I talked to most of the stand holders who were all busy chatting with job seekers.
Now that Ireland has reached near total employment, hotels are finding it extremely hard to hire/retain chefs and other hotel staff. Check out the vacancies at Flannerys here.
A while ago Antares announced 50 jobs! They are currently located in Mervue, but are due to move to Oranmore . Vacancies here or check out my file with jobs I saw
Abbott have a number vacancies in customer Service, Project Management, Technical support& Finance. Check vacancies here.
ALS - located in Loughrea, are looking for general operatives for various shits. Send coverletter and CV to ALSLoughrea.Jobs@alsglobal.com
The Chanelle Group, also located in Loughrea, have just announced 300+ new jobs, so that stand was very busy! Check out their jobs here
Transitions Optical – Tuam have a number of vacancies: Director, photochromic solutions and systems, R&D consumer studies Optometrist, Transitions Supply Chain Director and a Senior consolidation & Business Analyst - CV’s to amy.oleary@transitions.com
Merit Medical – 15 + vacancies .Check out their vacancies here.
Metlife – This is another company I’d recommend you follow. Sign up to their Job alerts. They opened a “state of the art” Software development campus in the city centre earlier in the years. Jobs here.
Ericsson - not really in Galway ( yet), but as Athlone is not that far, it’s worth to check their jobs here.
Johnson & Johnson ( Cerenovus) - they do have a Galway office, but the vacancies(as far as I understood )are in Limerick or Cork. Jobs here.
Product Equipment Ltd have a number of vacancies, check them out here.
Abbvie, who have locations in Dublin, Cork, and Galway had an impressive stand. Their biggest site is located in Sligo, and I’d recommend you keep an eye out on their job board here, as they are looking at remote working for their employees. Some of the vacancies are in Galway, check them here.
Kelly Services ( hiring for Creganna) , BCS Recruitment & Tandem Project Management represented the recruitment industry.
For training, education and upskilling :FIT, GRETB, Innopharma College of Applied and NUIG had a stand.
In comparison to previous years, there were a number of companies missing entirely, both companies that are hiring directly versus recruitment companies – not sure why….. There are almost 100 FDI companies in the West of Ireland, check out the list above I obtained from the IDA.
Maybe they are moving away from “traditional” recruiting? Or maybe they are recruiting remote employees? If you are interested in working remotely in Ireland, or are a company that wants to employ remotely, check out a new community project called Growremote, connecting those that work remotely, show the opportunities there are ,benefits of remote working, and highlighting where there are co-working spaces, hubs and much more! Ireland’s first remote working event is taking place on the 28th of September in Tralee with an impressive list of speakers - tickets are 30 Euros and can be bought here!
