Unfortunately my business idea of making Lilos with Galway has been shortlived, the weather has turned quite a bit colder. Oh well, it was good for as long as it did last( 3 weeks in a row of beach weather was a welcome change!)
Galway Marine Innovation Map by Prof.John Breslin
Following on my previous newsletters, I wanted to give you a visual overview of the types of industries in Galway, and where those businesses are located. I already covered the ICT, Medtech, the AgInnovation Ecosystem map in previous newsletters. Go to the archives to see the previous newsletter. The map for today is the Marine Innovation map. Somehow this map never caught my attention, so I am excited to delve a little bit deeper into it. For next week, I am not sure yet, I may cover remote working opportunities, or maybe I might just talk about traffic around Galway:) Let me know by pressing the reply button what you would prefer:)
Who are the players in the Galway Marine Innovation map.
As Galway is a port, there are many companies that supply services to/in the harbour, and there are Marine research and development companies, the university, some beauty/healthy companies and of course a museum! Coupled that there are plenty of fish in the sea, there is also a lively food/fish industry! I hope you get a chance to eat fish and chips at McDonaghs in Quay Street. They were featured on RTE a while ago, check out this video.
If you know/are a company that needs to get added, please reach out to Prof. John Breslin, you can follow him on Twitter via @johnbreslin or even better follow @tech_innovate.
I’ll touch on a few to get you going.
This is the main port authority, located at the docks in the city centre. There are big plans to expand the port, enabling cruisers to dock in Galway. Didn’t see any vacancies, so best to email them. There is a big festival coming up called “Seafest” at the end of June. Attended the event a few years ago, and it was fabulous. More info here.
The Martine Institute is located in Oranmore, about 10 kms outside of Galway city.
The Marine Institute was set up under the Marine Institute Act 1991: “to undertake, to coordinate, to promote and to assist in marine research and development and to provide such services related to research and development, that in the opinion of the Institute, will promote economic development and create employment and protect the marine environment.” I regularly see vacancies in research, some funding opportunities. Check out their current vacancies here, most of them temporary, but if that is your discipline it will be one of the organisations you will quite likely end up working for.
Marine and Freshwater Research centre ( MFRC) in GMIT
A dynamic group of researchers, academics and students working together to enhance the management of marine and freshwater ecosystems worldwide.
They have a few Research vacancies.
Seaweed has always played a very important role in Galway’s economy. If you vist Dungaire Castle in Kinvara, it talks about how Galway Seaweed was exported globally in the Middle ages. This article talks about Seaweed farms in the Burren, back as far as the stone age.
Didn’t see any vacancies there.

The power of referral : if you happen to know someone in any of the companies you want to work for, companies usually have a referral system in place, getting you CV to HR quicker. Or if you are brave enough, send an employee that works there a message via Linkedin.
PS. If you are reaching out, tell them you heard about them via this newslettter :)
