Welcome to Galway Job Connector's Newsletter!
Hello all,
Welcome, Bienvenue, Welkom, Herzlich Willkommen, céad míle fáilte,ترحيب,powitanie,Sveiki atvykę, and in every other language to the 23rd. Galway Job Connector Newsletter.
Very excited to have you on-board!
If this your first newsletter you are getting, my name is Katleen, and I have been writing a weekly newsletter since October last year with info about the Galway job market. I myself moved from Belgium to Ireland 25 years ago, and ever since I have had a keen interest to figure out where the jobs are, and what skills employers are looking for. You’ll find resources at the bottom of the newsletter, such as newspaper articles and links to search engines and a free job bulletin.
Map 1 : Galway Tech Map
Following on my previous newsletter, I wanted to give you a visual overview of the types of industries in Galway. At the moment there are 4 maps, one for ICT, Medtech, Agri and a newer one, for Creative arts.
This is handy to have, so you know where the companies physically are. For those in Galway, you probably know this ( but may not know that those maps exists, those further may need some help to visually see where the companies are.
Below is the first map (created by Prof. John Breslin ) with the article that contains the image, and the original article ( with the first map)providing info on the companies. The map is work in progress, and I think is due an update:).

As mentioned before, you are either looking at the city centre ( where the newer companies are based ) or the outskirts of Galway City( BallyBrit, BallyBane, Parkmore- Oranmore( Cisco) - a car will greatly help you to get there.
Where to find their job vacancies? I’d recommend you go to their website, and set up an alert if they offer one. My understanding is that many of these companies list first on their website and Glassdoor/Linkedin, and if they are not getting the right candidates that way, they work with recruitment agencies, who will list on their own website, and (also) on search engines.
The power of referral : if you happen to know someone in any of the companies you want to work for, companies usually have a referral system in place, getting you CV to HR quicker.
I’ll be talking about the Medical Map/cluster in my next newsletter with a few interesting anecdotes.
Some observations around accommodation, transport and a word of warning.
If you are moving to Galway, accommodation is/can be a serious showstopper, in the sense that it is difficult to find (affordable) accommodation. You may need to look elsewhere, such as Oranmore/Barna , or further afield( ie a car is needed - Gort). On a positive note, since December, Oranmore/Barna have been included in the city limits, so bus fares have dropped by almost 50%. Now that the motorway is open, driving from Gort to Galway City takes just over 20 minutes( Okay, you are not in the city centre yet!) but it is bypassing the bottlenecks of Clarinbridge, so that’s another place you could look at( if country living is your thing this is). I wrote an article about the Motorway, just before it opened.
My word of warning is around some Facebook groups that offer accommodation, and require you to log in via Facebook( requiring all your info!!) to get access to the properties. Once logged in, there are no properties, (and you may be unwittingly enrolled in a fee), so be very very mindful. Stick with the above the ground websites such as the local paper www.advertiser.ie http://www.glasan.com/accommodation/ and www.daft.ie As an anecdote, a friend of mine ( who recently moved from Germany ) found a property to rent via www.daft.ie . The landlady received 100 applications, and she blind picked 3 candidates. He was the lucky one.
Job News and Galway related articles
As the week progresses, I bookmark articles I come across in the media/Twitter/FB/Linkedin.
Didn’t come across Galway specific new Job announcements in the media this week. It’s always good to keep an eye here, as depending on the amount of jobs created, there is more( or less) media coverage. This article gives an excellent overview of where else in Ireland there have been job creations.
